Choosing a Dermatologist in Seoul: Board-Certified vs General Clinics

Quick answer

When choosing a dermatologist in Korea, confirm the doctor is a board-certified dermatologist (pibugwa jeonmuui), not only a clinic that offers skin treatments. Check who examines and treats you, and that recovery fits your trip. At The Heal in Jamsil, Dr. Yang is a board-certified dermatologist. Message us on KakaoTalk with photos and travel dates to plan your visit.

Board-certified dermatologist vs general clinic

In Korea, any licensed doctor may legally provide many cosmetic skin treatments. A board-certified dermatologist (피부과 전문의, pibugwa jeonmuui) has gone further: after medical school and an internship, they complete a multi-year dermatology residency and pass a national specialist examination. That training covers skin diseases, pigment disorders, scarring and the safe use of lasers and injectables. Many clinics offering lasers, Botox or lifting are run by doctors trained in other fields. They can be skilled, but if you want specialist-level judgment, especially for melasma, rosacea, darker skin or medical conditions, ask directly. See what board-certified means in Korea .

How to tell from the sign and website

A clinic whose name includes 피부과 (pibugwa, dermatology) as its own specialty, such as "OO 피부과의원", is generally run by a dermatology specialist. Clinics where "dermatology" appears only in a list of treated areas (진료과목, "treatment subjects") may not have a dermatologist on staff. On websites, look for the doctor's name, medical school and specialty, rather than only device photos. Our own details are on the Dr. Yang Jeong-hwa page.

When in doubt, simply ask: "Is the doctor who will treat me a board-certified dermatologist?"

Questions to ask before you book

  • Who will examine me, and who will perform the treatment?
  • Is the doctor a board-certified dermatologist?
  • Which device or product will be used, and is it genuine and approved in Korea?
  • What recovery should I expect, and does it fit my flight?
  • How can I contact the clinic after I return home?
  • Will I receive aftercare instructions in English?

A good clinic answers these clearly and is comfortable with you taking time to decide. For other safety points, read is medical tourism in Korea safe?

When specialist expertise matters most

Some situations particularly benefit from a dermatologist's training:

  • Pigment conditions such as melasma , which can worsen with the wrong laser settings.
  • Darker skin tones, where lasers carry a higher risk of pigment change.
  • Rosacea, eczema or acne alongside cosmetic goals.
  • Moles or growths that may need assessment before removal.
  • Combining lifting, injectables and lasers into a safe sequence.

If any of these apply to you, send us your photos for an honest opinion .

Frequently asked

Choosing a Dermatologist in Korea: your questions answered

  • Is a cosmetic clinic in Korea the same as a dermatology clinic?

Not always. Many cosmetic clinics are run by doctors from other specialties. A dermatology clinic run by a board-certified dermatologist has specialist training in skin diseases, lasers and injectables. Both are licensed, but their training differs.

  • How do I verify a doctor's specialty in Korea?

Check the clinic name and website for the doctor's specialty, and ask the clinic directly. A board-certified dermatologist is described as 피부과 전문의. Reputable clinics answer this question openly.

  • Does the doctor perform the treatment personally?

Practices vary between clinics, so it is worth asking before you book. At The Heal, Dr. Yang examines you in person, explains your options and personally designs your treatment plan.

  • Do I need a dermatologist for simple treatments like laser toning?

Not strictly, but settings matter, especially for melasma or darker skin. A dermatologist can recognize when toning is not the right choice and adjust treatment to reduce the risk of pigment problems.
