Pigmentation & Brightening Treatment in Seoul, Korea
Quick answer
Pigmentation treatment uses lasers, topical care and sun protection to fade melasma, freckles, sun spots and marks for a brighter, more even tone. At The Heal in Jamsil, Seoul, a dermatologist first identifies the pigment type, then chooses PicoK, StarWalker or gentle toning. Melasma needs especially careful, gradual treatment. Results vary between individuals.

Why the type of pigment matters
Brown spots can look alike but behave very differently. Freckles and sun spots (solar lentigines) often respond well to targeted laser in one or two sessions. Melasma, a hormonally influenced pigment, can worsen with aggressive heat and needs low-energy toning, topical or oral therapy and strict sun protection. Some flat or raised brown lesions may need a medical assessment first.
That is why diagnosis comes before treatment at The Heal, and why our Tone Harmony Therapy considers pigment and redness together.
Laser platforms for pigment
Lasers break down pigment into fragments that the body clears over the following weeks. The wavelength, pulse duration and energy are chosen according to the pigment's depth and your skin type. Most pigment treatments involve a series rather than a single visit, and progress is reviewed at each session so settings can be adjusted to how your skin responds.
- Pico Laser (PicoK) — picosecond pulses for pigment, toning and marks
- StarWalker Laser — multi-mode laser for spots and toning
- Laser Toning — gentle, repeated low-energy sessions for overall brightness

Recovery, sun protection and darker skin
After spot removal, small dark crusts may form and flake off within about a week; protective dressings may be used. Toning usually causes only mild redness. In all cases, daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential, as UV exposure can bring pigment back. People with darker skin tones can often be treated safely, but settings are more conservative because of a higher risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation. Pigment lasers are generally postponed during pregnancy.

The Heal approach
We identify the pigment before we treat it, and we would rather fade melasma slowly than risk making it darker with too much heat.

Frequently asked
Pigmentation & Brightening: your questions answered
Can melasma be cured?
Melasma can be significantly improved and controlled, but it tends to recur, especially with sun exposure or hormonal changes. Ongoing sun protection and occasional maintenance are usually part of a long-term plan.
How many sessions do I need for sun spots?
Many freckles and sun spots fade noticeably after one or two sessions, though some need more. Melasma and overall toning typically require a series of sessions spaced one to several weeks apart.
Is there downtime after pigment laser?
Toning has little downtime beyond mild redness. Spot removal can leave small dark crusts for around a week. Plan spot treatment early in your trip if you want to see healing before you leave.
Can I go sightseeing after laser toning?
Yes, as long as you protect your skin with sunscreen, a hat and shade. Avoid long periods in strong sun, saunas and very hot environments for a few days after treatment.
