Do I Need Sunscreen After Laser? A Seoul Dermatologist's Advice

Quick answer

Yes. Sunscreen is essential after any laser, because freshly treated skin is more sensitive to UV and more likely to develop dark spots (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 to 50 daily and reapply every 2 to 3 hours outdoors, for at least 4 weeks. At The Heal in Jamsil, Seoul, we include sun care in every aftercare plan. Ask us on KakaoTalk for product suggestions.

Why sun protection matters after laser

Lasers cause controlled inflammation, and inflamed skin produces pigment more easily when exposed to UV. Without protection, a laser meant to fade spots can leave new brown patches, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This risk is higher in Asian and darker skin tones and after resurfacing treatments.

Sun exposure can also undo pigment results; melasma in particular darkens quickly with UV and heat. See sun spots and age spots .

How to use sunscreen after treatment

  • Choose broad-spectrum SPF 30 to 50 (PA+++ or higher on Korean products)
  • Apply a generous layer every morning, even indoors near windows
  • Reapply every 2 to 3 hours outdoors, and after sweating
  • Add a hat, sunglasses and shade during midday
  • Mineral (zinc oxide) formulas are often gentler on sensitive skin

After CO2 laser, follow the specific healing instructions first, then begin sunscreen once advised. See CO2 laser downtime .

How long should I protect my skin?

Strict protection for at least 4 weeks after laser is a common rule, and longer after resurfacing or melasma treatment. Realistically, daily sunscreen is the best long-term habit to keep results from laser toning , pico laser or spot removal.

Avoid tanning, sunbathing and outdoor sports in strong sun during this period.

Frequently asked

Do I need sunscreen after laser? Related questions

  • Do I need sunscreen on cloudy days?

Yes. A large share of UV passes through clouds, so daily sunscreen is still important after laser.

  • Do I need sunscreen indoors?

If you sit near windows, yes. UVA passes through glass and can contribute to pigmentation.

  • Can I use a sunscreen with tint?

Yes, once the skin is intact. Tinted mineral sunscreens with iron oxides may also help protect against visible light.

  • What if I got sunburned after laser?
