FAQ
Can Pico Laser Treat Melasma? A Seoul Dermatologist Explains
Quick answer
Yes, pico laser can help lighten melasma when used at low energy as a toning treatment over several sessions, but it controls melasma rather than curing it. Results are best combined with strict sun protection and topical care, since melasma can return. At The Heal in Jamsil, Seoul, a dermatologist adjusts settings carefully to avoid irritation. How does pico laser help melasma?
Picosecond lasers deliver energy in extremely short pulses, breaking pigment into finer particles with less heat than older lasers. For melasma, the laser is used at low energy over a wide area, often called pico toning, to gradually lighten pigment without provoking the skin.
At The Heal we use PicoK, and sometimes StarWalker, depending on your pigment type. Read more on pico laser in Seoul .
Why gentle settings matter
Melasma is driven by hormones, sun and inflammation. Aggressive or high-heat laser can irritate the skin and make melasma darker, or cause rebound pigmentation, especially in Asian and darker skin tones. That is why melasma treatment is slow and conservative: low energy, steady sessions, and close monitoring of how your skin reacts.

What else is part of a melasma plan?
- Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapplication, plus hats and shade
- Topical lightening agents prescribed or recommended by a dermatologist
- Barrier-friendly skincare to keep inflammation low
- In some cases, oral medication after medical review
- Our Tone Harmony Therapy program, which combines these steps

How many sessions and how long will it take?
Many people need a series of roughly 5 to 10 sessions spaced every 2 to 4 weeks, with gradual lightening over months. Melasma often recurs with sun exposure, pregnancy or hormonal changes, so maintenance is usually needed. Results vary, and we do not promise complete clearance.

Frequently asked
Can pico laser treat melasma? Related questions
Can melasma come back after pico laser?
Yes. Melasma is a chronic tendency, so it can return with sun, heat or hormonal changes. Sun protection and maintenance help keep it controlled.
Is pico laser better than Q-switched laser for melasma?
Both can be used as gentle toning. Pico pulses deliver less heat, which some dermatologists prefer for sensitive pigment. Technique and settings matter more than the device name.
Can I do melasma treatment during pregnancy?
We usually wait until after pregnancy and breastfeeding, since melasma often changes during this time and some topical treatments are avoided.
Does pico laser hurt?
Toning feels like light snapping or warmth. Most people tolerate it without numbing.
