Pico Laser in Seoul: PicoK for Pigment and Even Tone
Quick answer
A pico laser delivers ultra-short picosecond pulses that shatter pigment into tiny particles with less heat than older lasers, making it useful for sun spots, melasma toning, brown acne marks and tattoos. At The Heal in Jamsil, Seoul, we use PicoK with settings chosen by a dermatologist for your skin type. Toning usually has no real downtime. Message us on KakaoTalk with photos to start planning.

What makes a pico laser different?
Pigment lasers work by sending energy that melanin or tattoo ink absorbs. Older Q-switched lasers use nanosecond pulses; picosecond lasers fire pulses roughly a thousand times shorter. That extremely short burst creates a strong mechanical (photoacoustic) effect that breaks pigment into finer fragments while delivering less heat to surrounding skin.
Less heat is especially helpful for Asian and darker skin types, which are more prone to rebound pigmentation after laser injury. Finer pigment particles are also easier for the body to clear, which can mean fewer sessions for certain lesions. The doctor still chooses wavelength, spot size and energy carefully for each concern.
What PicoK can treat
- Sun spots and freckles: targeted shots lighten discrete brown spots — see freckles and sunspot removal
- Melasma: low-fluence toning is one part of our Tone Harmony Therapy for melasma
- Brown post-acne marks: gentle passes speed up fading
- Dull, uneven tone: regular toning sessions brighten overall complexion
- Tattoos: pico pulses fragment ink, though removal usually needs multiple sessions
- Textural improvement: with fractional handpieces, mild skin renewal
The doctor confirms which of these applies to you after examining your skin, since several pigment problems can look alike. Mixed concerns are common, and settings may change from one zone of the face to another.
Who is a good candidate?
Pico laser suits adults with pigment concerns who want low downtime. It is often a first choice for people with Asian skin tones who have had rebound pigmentation with other lasers. Melasma requires careful, gentle settings and should always be managed as a long-term condition rather than a one-session fix.
Treatment is postponed if you have a recent tan, active infection, cold sores or open wounds in the area. Tell the doctor if you are pregnant, take medications that increase light sensitivity, or have a history of keloids. Some spots that look like pigment, such as unusual moles, should be examined first and never lasered without assessment.
Recovery and aftercare
Toning sessions leave the skin slightly pink for a few hours, and you can apply makeup the same day. When discrete spots are targeted, they may darken and form fine crusts that flake off in about five to seven days; a small dressing or recovery patch can be used. Do not pick the crusts.
Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential, along with a gentle moisturizer. Avoid strong exfoliating acids and retinoids for a few days. Temporary darkening or lightening can occur and usually settles, and results vary from person to person.
Planning pico laser on a Seoul trip
Toning has virtually no downtime, so it is easy to add to a short visit; flying the next day is fine. Spot removal is also travel-friendly, but crusts are visible for about a week, so plan around important photos or events. Melasma toning works best as a series, which can be started in Seoul and continued at home with your local dermatologist.

The Heal approach
We use PicoK conservatively on pigment-prone skin, adjusting energy at every visit based on how your skin responded last time.

Frequently asked
Pico Laser (PicoK): your questions answered
Is pico laser better than Q-switched laser?
Neither is always better. Pico lasers deliver less heat and finer pigment breakdown, which helps for certain spots and sensitive skin, while Q-switched lasers remain effective for many lesions. The doctor chooses based on your pigment type.
Does pico laser hurt?
Toning feels like light snapping on the skin and is usually tolerable without numbing. Spot treatment is a little sharper, and numbing cream can be used for larger areas or tattoos.
Can pico laser make melasma worse?
Aggressive settings can trigger rebound pigmentation in melasma. That is why we use gentle toning, combine it with topical or oral therapy and strict sun protection, and adjust settings conservatively.
How many sessions do I need?
Discrete sun spots often lighten after one or two sessions. Toning for melasma or dull skin typically needs a series, often around five to ten, spaced one to two weeks apart. Results vary.
