Melasma Treatment in Seoul: Tone Harmony Therapy

Quick answer

Melasma is a chronic pigment condition that improves best with a gentle, combined plan rather than strong lasers. At The Heal in Jamsil, Seoul, our Tone Harmony Therapy combines low-fluence laser toning, topical and, when appropriate, oral medication, strict sun protection and a relapse-prevention routine. Most patients see gradual lightening over several months. Send photos of your melasma for an initial view before you travel.

What is melasma, and why does it come back?

Melasma appears as symmetrical, blotchy light-to-dark brown patches, usually on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip or jawline. It is driven by a combination of sun and visible light exposure, hormones (including pregnancy and hormonal contraception), genetics and heat. It is especially common in women with medium skin tones, including many Asian patients.

Because those triggers do not disappear, melasma is considered a chronic condition. Treatment can lighten it significantly, but it can return with sun exposure, hormonal change or irritation. That is why a realistic plan focuses on control and maintenance rather than a single cure. Learn more on our melasma concern page .

How Tone Harmony Therapy works

Tone Harmony Therapy is our signature program for melasma and uneven tone. It combines several gentle steps instead of relying on a single aggressive treatment:

  • Low-fluence laser toning with PicoK or Q-switched lasers to gradually break up pigment without triggering inflammation
  • Topical therapy such as prescription brightening creams, azelaic acid or other pigment-regulating ingredients
  • Oral medication such as tranexamic acid, considered only after reviewing your health history
  • Barrier support to keep skin calm, since irritation can darken melasma
  • Strict sun and visible-light protection every day

Each element is adjusted over time as the doctor sees how your melasma responds, and the plan is reviewed at every visit.

Who is a good candidate?

Most adults with melasma can benefit, especially those who have tried creams alone without lasting improvement. The doctor first confirms the diagnosis, since melasma can coexist with sun spots, freckles or a pigment condition called Hori's nevus, which need different treatments.

Some steps are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, including certain prescription creams and oral tranexamic acid. Oral tranexamic acid is also avoided in people with a history of blood clots or certain other conditions. Recent tanning, active skin irritation or strong peels may delay laser toning. Results vary between individuals, and honest expectations are part of the plan.

What sessions are like, and how many you need

Toning sessions are short, usually 15 to 20 minutes, and most people feel only light snapping. Skin may look slightly pink for an hour or two, with no peeling, so you can return to work or sightseeing immediately.

Sessions are typically spaced one to two weeks apart, and a course often involves around five to ten visits depending on your skin's response. Settings are kept deliberately low and adjusted each time, because overly strong energy can cause rebound darkening or white spots. Our pico laser for melasma FAQ explains this in more detail.

Treating melasma as an international patient

The main concern for visitors is that melasma needs repeated sessions. In practice, many patients start Tone Harmony Therapy with one or more toning sessions in Seoul, receive a clear home regimen, and continue toning and follow-up with a dermatologist at home. Toning has no downtime, so you can fly the next day.

If you visit Seoul regularly, sessions can be clustered during each trip. Consistent sunscreen and avoiding heat and irritation between visits matter as much as the laser. To plan a schedule that fits your travel, contact us with your dates and a few clear photos.

The Heal approach

Our Tone Harmony Therapy treats melasma as a long-term condition: low, adjustable laser energy combined with medication and protection, reviewed at every visit.

Frequently asked

Melasma Treatment: your questions answered

  • Can melasma be cured permanently?

Melasma is chronic, so permanent cure is not realistic. Most people can lighten it considerably and keep it controlled with sun protection, maintenance toning and topical care. Flare-ups are common in summer or with hormonal change.

  • Is tranexamic acid safe for melasma?

Oral tranexamic acid is widely used for melasma in low doses, but it is not suitable for everyone, including people with clotting risks or who are pregnant. The doctor reviews your history before prescribing.

  • Why did my melasma get worse after laser elsewhere?

Strong laser energy or repeated irritation can trigger rebound pigmentation. Melasma usually responds better to very gentle settings combined with medication. The doctor will review what was done before.

  • What sunscreen is best for melasma?

A broad-spectrum, high-SPF sunscreen reapplied during the day, ideally a tinted formula with iron oxides that also helps block visible light. Hats and shade add protection, especially in summer.

  • Can I treat melasma during pregnancy?

Lasers and many prescription treatments are usually postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Gentle sun protection and safe skincare are the focus, and melasma can be treated more actively afterward.
