Skin Concerns

Melasma Treatment in Seoul by a Dermatologist

Quick answer

Melasma is a chronic pigmentation condition that is best managed, rather than cured, with a gentle combination of low-energy laser toning or pico laser, prescription brightening agents and strict sun protection. At The Heal in Jamsil, Seoul, a board-certified dermatologist uses our Tone Harmony Therapy to lighten patches without triggering rebound. Downtime is minimal, results build over several sessions and vary. Send a no-makeup photo on KakaoTalk for a melasma plan.

What causes melasma?

Melasma appears as symmetrical brown or gray-brown patches on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip or jawline. It is more common in women and in Asian, Hispanic and Middle Eastern skin types. Key factors include:

  • Hormones: pregnancy, oral contraceptives and hormone therapy can trigger or worsen it.
  • Sun and visible light: UV and even visible light stimulate pigment cells.
  • Heat: saunas, cooking heat and hot climates can aggravate it.
  • Genetics: a family history increases risk.
  • Inflammation and irritation: harsh treatments or products can make it worse.

Because melasma is chronic and recurs easily, gentle long-term management is essential.

How a dermatologist assesses melasma

Dr. Yang examines the pattern, color and depth of pigmentation, sometimes using a special light to tell epidermal from deeper pigment. She distinguishes melasma from look-alikes such as sun spots, freckles, Hori's nevus or post-inflammatory pigmentation, since each needs a different approach and some respond to stronger lasers that would worsen melasma. She also reviews hormonal factors, sun habits, skincare and previous treatments. If past aggressive laser caused rebound darkening, she plans an especially gentle program. Photos are taken under consistent lighting to track gradual lightening, which can otherwise be hard to notice day to day.

Treatment options at The Heal, ranked by suitability

  1. Low-energy laser toning: laser toning gradually reduces pigment with minimal irritation.
  2. Pico laser: PicoK at gentle settings breaks pigment into smaller particles.
  3. Medical brightening: prescription topicals and, when suitable, oral tranexamic acid support laser results.
  4. Program approach: our melasma treatment follows Tone Harmony Therapy, combining these with barrier care.

Strong, high-energy lasers are avoided because they can trigger rebound pigmentation. Low-energy toning ranks first because consistency without irritation is what keeps melasma calm. Sessions are usually one to two weeks apart, and medical brightening is continued between visits for the best effect.

Home care: the foundation of melasma control

Wear a broad-spectrum, high-protection sunscreen every day, ideally a tinted formula with iron oxides that also blocks visible light, and reapply outdoors. Add a wide-brimmed hat and avoid peak sun. Limit heat exposure from saunas and hot yoga. Use gentle, non-irritating skincare; ingredients such as tranexamic acid, niacinamide, azelaic acid and vitamin C may help. Avoid scrubs and strong peels at home. If hormonal contraception seems to worsen melasma, discuss alternatives with your doctor. Consistency over months matters more than any single treatment.

Safety, maintenance and when to see a doctor

Gentle laser toning and pico treatments have little visible downtime, though mild redness may last a few hours. Melasma can recur with sun exposure, heat or hormonal change, so maintenance sessions and daily sun protection are part of long-term care. Some topical and oral treatments are not used during pregnancy. See a dermatologist if a dark patch is irregular, changing or itchy, to rule out other conditions. For visitors, the main objection is the number of sessions: we design a plan you can continue at home. Book a melasma consultation and read can pico laser treat melasma?

The Heal approach

Our Tone Harmony Therapy treats melasma gently and consistently, lightening patches while protecting the skin barrier to reduce the risk of rebound.

Frequently asked

Melasma: your questions answered

  • Can melasma be cured permanently?

Melasma is considered a chronic condition. It can be lightened significantly and kept under control, but it may return with sun exposure, heat or hormonal changes. Ongoing sun protection and maintenance are key.

  • How many laser toning sessions does melasma need?

Many patients need around five to ten sessions spaced one to two weeks apart, followed by maintenance. The exact number depends on depth and response. Results vary between individuals.

  • Can I treat melasma during a short trip?

You can start with an assessment, a first gentle session and a home-care plan with prescriptions. Because melasma needs repeated sessions, we help you plan continuation with a local dermatologist or future visits.

  • Is melasma treatment safe during pregnancy?

Most laser and oral treatments are postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Strict sun protection and selected gentle topicals may be recommended until treatment can safely begin. We can advise on pregnancy-safe skincare.
