Freckles and Sunspot Removal in Seoul with Pigment Lasers
Quick answer
Freckles and sun spots can usually be lightened or removed with pigment lasers that target melanin in each spot. At The Heal in Jamsil, Seoul, a dermatologist first checks every lesion, then treats suitable spots with pico or Q-switched lasers and protects them with recovery dressings. Expect small crusts for about a week. Book early in your trip so spots can heal before you fly home.

Freckles, sun spots and look-alikes
Several common brown spots look similar but behave differently:
- Freckles (ephelides): small, light brown spots that darken in summer, often since childhood — see freckles
- Sun spots (solar lentigines): flat brown spots from cumulative UV exposure, usually larger and more persistent — see sun spots and age spots
- Seborrheic keratoses: slightly raised, textured spots that need a different method
- Melasma: blotchy patches that can worsen with aggressive spot lasers
Any spot that is new, changing, irregular or bleeding should be examined before any cosmetic treatment. That is why the doctor reviews every lesion first.
How spot lasers remove pigment
Pigment lasers deliver very short pulses absorbed by melanin in each spot. The energy breaks pigment apart, the treated area darkens and forms a thin crust, and when the crust sheds the spot is lighter or gone. We choose between PicoK and StarWalker depending on the type, depth and color of the spot and your skin tone.
Freckles often respond in one or two sessions. Larger or darker sun spots may need two or three. If you also have melasma, the doctor plans spot treatment carefully so it does not aggravate surrounding pigment.
Recovery with dressings
After treatment, each spot looks darker or slightly grey. A thin hydrocolloid patch or recovery dressing is often applied to protect the area and help it heal evenly. Over five to seven days, small crusts form and fall off on their own; do not pick them.
Once the crusts shed, new skin may look pink for a few weeks. Temporary darkening, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, can occur, especially in medium to darker skin or with sun exposure, and usually fades with time and care. Daily sunscreen is essential to protect results and prevent new spots. Results vary between individuals.
Who is a good candidate?
Adults with flat, benign freckles or sun spots who can protect their skin from sun afterward are good candidates. Those with lighter skin and clear, discrete spots often see the most dramatic change.
Treatment is postponed with a recent tan, active infection or cold sores, and may be adjusted during pregnancy. Tell the doctor about photosensitizing medication or a history of keloids. Spots that look suspicious are not lasered; they may need a biopsy or referral first, which is part of our mole assessment approach. If you are unsure what a spot is, bring it up at your consultation.
Timing spot removal around travel
Visible crusts are the main concern for travelers. Flying with small dressings is safe, but you may prefer spots to be healed before photos or returning to work. Ideally, schedule treatment at the start of your trip so you have five to seven days of healing in Seoul.
If you have only a few days, the doctor may treat fewer spots or suggest gentle toning first. Freckles also tend to return with sun exposure, so autumn and winter are popular seasons for removal. Share your dates with us and we will help you plan.
The Heal approach
Every spot is checked by a dermatologist before any laser touches it, and we treat only what is clearly benign and suited to laser.

Frequently asked
Freckles & Sunspot Removal: your questions answered
Will freckles come back after laser removal?
Treated freckles often fade well, but new freckles can appear with sun exposure because the tendency is genetic. Daily sunscreen and hats help keep results, and occasional touch-ups are common.
How long do I need to wear the dressing?
Usually a few days to about a week, until the small crusts have shed naturally. The doctor or nurse will show you how to change dressings and cleanse gently.
Can I wear makeup over treated spots?
Avoid makeup directly on fresh crusts or under dressings. Once the surface has healed, usually after about a week, you can apply makeup normally with sunscreen underneath. Mineral sunscreen is a good first layer.
Is sunspot removal painful?
Most people describe a quick snapping or stinging sensation for each pulse. Numbing cream can be used if many spots are treated. Discomfort usually settles within an hour. Cooling afterward helps.
