Oily Skin in Seoul: Control Shine and Clogged Pores
Quick answer
Oily skin produces excess sebum, leading to shine, enlarged-looking pores and a tendency to breakouts. It is driven by genetics, hormones, humidity and sometimes over-cleansing. Treatment combines a balanced routine with in-clinic options such as skin Botox, RF microneedling and acne care. At The Heal in Jamsil, Seoul, a dermatologist tailors the plan to your skin. Results vary. Message us on KakaoTalk to ask which option fits.

What causes oily skin?
Sebaceous glands produce sebum to protect the skin. When they are especially active, the result is oily skin. Main contributors include:
- Genetics: oily skin often runs in families
- Hormones: androgens increase oil, which is why it peaks in adolescence and can flare with menstrual cycles
- Climate: heat and humidity, like Seoul summers, increase shine
- Over-cleansing: stripping the skin can trigger rebound oiliness and dehydration
- Heavy products: rich creams and some makeup can clog pores
Oily skin is not all bad: it often shows fine lines later. The aim is balance, not a completely matte, dried-out face.
How a dermatologist assesses oily skin
The doctor looks at where oil collects, pore size, blackheads, active breakouts and any redness or flaking. Many people with oily skin are also dehydrated because harsh products have damaged the barrier, which makes them feel tight yet shiny. Hormonal patterns, medications and diet are discussed, and conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis are ruled out.
If breakouts are a major part of the picture, see active acne or adult acne . If pores are your main concern, our enlarged pores page covers that in more depth.
Standardized photos may be taken so progress can be compared fairly.
Treatment options at The Heal, ranked by suitability
- Skin Botox (micro Botox) — superficial injections that can temporarily reduce oil production and refine the look of pores.
- Pore tightening treatment — targeted care to refine visible pores on oily areas.
- Potenza RF microneedling — radiofrequency microneedling that targets sebaceous glands and texture.
- Acne treatment — medical and in-clinic care when oiliness leads to breakouts.
Prescription options, such as topical retinoids or, in selected cases, oral medication, may also be considered. Oral isotretinoin is not used during pregnancy.
The doctor chooses based on your main concern: shine, pores or breakouts.
A balanced routine for oily skin
The right routine keeps shine in check without over-drying:
- Cleanse twice daily with a gentle gel cleanser; avoid harsh, squeaky-clean washes
- Use a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer; skipping moisturizer often backfires
- Try ingredients such as niacinamide, salicylic acid or a retinoid
- Choose oil-free, non-comedogenic sunscreen and makeup
- Blot during the day instead of washing repeatedly
Clay masks once or twice a week can help, but avoid using several strong actives at once, which damages the barrier and increases oil in the long run.
Washing pillowcases and phone screens regularly also reduces oil and bacteria transfer to the skin. Results vary between individuals.
Can I treat oily skin on a short trip?
Yes, and many options suit travelers. Skin Botox has very little downtime, with small bumps that disappear within hours, and results appear over about a week. RF microneedling causes redness for one to three days, so it is best done early in your stay. Effects on oil are temporary and vary, so maintenance is usually needed. Frequently asked
Oily Skin: your questions answered
Does skin Botox really reduce oil?
Superficial micro-injections of botulinum toxin can temporarily reduce sebum production and refine the look of pores in many people. Effects usually last a few months and vary between individuals, so periodic maintenance is common.
Should I skip moisturizer if my skin is oily?
No. Skipping moisturizer can dehydrate the skin and trigger more oil. A lightweight, non-comedogenic gel or lotion keeps the barrier healthy without adding heaviness or clogging pores. Apply it after cleansing.
Why is my skin oilier in Seoul's summer?
Heat and humidity increase sebum production and sweating. Switching to a gel cleanser, a lighter moisturizer and oil-free sunscreen during summer, and blotting rather than washing often, helps manage shine.
Can oily skin cause acne?
Excess oil can mix with dead skin cells and clog pores, which creates an environment where acne develops. Not everyone with oily skin gets acne, but managing oil often helps reduce breakouts.
