Post-Acne Marks Treatment in Seoul: Red & Brown Spots
Quick answer
Post-acne marks are flat red or brown spots left after breakouts heal. Red marks (PIE) fade fastest with vascular laser such as Vbeam Perfecta, while brown marks (PIH) respond to gentle pico laser, laser toning and brightening skincare. At The Heal in Jamsil, Seoul, a board-certified dermatologist identifies the type first. Downtime is usually minimal, and results vary. Send a photo on KakaoTalk to learn which marks you have.

Red marks vs. brown marks: what is the difference?
After a pimple heals, it can leave a flat discoloration that is not a true scar. There are two main types:
- Post-inflammatory erythema (PIE): pink, red or purple marks caused by dilated small blood vessels. They are more common in lighter skin.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): brown or dark marks from excess melanin. They are more common in medium and darker skin tones, including many Asian skin types.
Both can fade on their own over months, but treatment speeds clearance, especially when marks are numerous or long-lasting. Indented marks are scars and need different care.
How a dermatologist identifies your marks
Dr. Yang examines your skin and may gently press on a mark: red marks that blanch under pressure are vascular, while brown marks that stay are pigment. She checks for active acne, which needs control first so new marks stop forming, and assesses your skin tone and sensitivity to choose safe laser settings. Many patients have a mix of red and brown marks plus some texture change, so the plan often combines approaches. She also reviews your skincare to avoid irritation that can create more pigmentation. Photos help confirm progress between sessions.
Treatment options at The Heal, ranked by suitability
- For red marks: Vbeam Perfecta targets the small vessels behind red marks.
- For brown marks: PicoK pico laser or laser toning gradually breaks up excess pigment.
- Combined program: our post-acne marks treatment pairs vascular and pigment lasers as needed.
- Skin quality: boosters and gentle peels help even tone and texture.
Prescription brightening creams can be used alongside laser to speed fading of brown marks. Vascular and pigment lasers rank by mark type rather than one being better overall. Sessions are usually spaced three to four weeks apart, and many patients see visible fading after the first two treatments.
Home care to fade marks faster
Daily sunscreen is essential: UV exposure darkens brown marks and prolongs red ones. Choose a gentle routine and avoid harsh scrubs. Ingredients such as niacinamide, azelaic acid, vitamin C and tranexamic acid can help brown marks, while azelaic acid and gentle retinoids can help both types. Introduce actives one at a time to avoid irritation. Most importantly, do not pick at pimples, which deepens marks and can create scars. Controlling active acne prevents new marks from forming while old ones fade. Patience and sun protection work together.
Downtime, safety and when to see a doctor
Vbeam may cause mild redness or occasional bruising depending on settings; pico laser and laser toning usually have little visible downtime. In darker skin, conservative settings and sun protection reduce the risk of temporary darkening. Treatment is postponed with active infection, recent tanning or during pregnancy for some options. See a doctor if a mark changes, bleeds or grows, as it may not be acne-related. Most mark treatments are travel-friendly; ask for a mark-clearing plan and read whether Vbeam causes bruising . Results vary between individuals.
The Heal approach
We separate red and brown marks before treating, so vascular and pigment lasers are each used where they work best and your skin is never over-treated.

Frequently asked
Post-Acne Marks: your questions answered
Will post-acne marks go away on their own?
Many marks fade gradually over months, but this can take a long time, especially for brown marks in darker skin. Treatment shortens the timeline and helps prevent new marks from forming.
Are post-acne marks the same as acne scars?
No. Marks are flat color changes, while scars involve a change in skin texture, such as dips or raised areas. Marks usually respond faster and need different treatments than scars.
How many laser sessions are needed for marks?
Many patients need two to five sessions spaced several weeks apart. Red marks often respond within a few Vbeam sessions, while brown marks may need more gentle pigment sessions. Results vary.
Is laser safe for brown marks on darker skin?
Yes, with appropriate devices and conservative settings. Gentle pico and toning lasers are often chosen to reduce the risk of rebound pigmentation, along with strict sun protection. A test area can be done first if you are concerned.
