Post-Acne Marks Treatment in Seoul: Red and Brown Spots

Quick answer

Post-acne marks are flat red or brown spots left after breakouts heal, and they fade faster when the right laser targets their color. At The Heal in Jamsil, Seoul, a dermatologist first distinguishes red marks (PIE) from brown marks (PIH), then uses Vbeam Perfecta for redness and a pico laser for pigment. Downtime is usually minimal. Send a photo in daylight for a first opinion.

Red marks or brown marks?

After a pimple heals, it can leave one of two kinds of flat mark, and they need different treatments:

  • Post-inflammatory erythema (PIE): pink, red or purplish marks caused by small dilated blood vessels. They are more common in lighter skin and blanch briefly when pressed.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): brown or grey-brown marks caused by extra melanin. They are more common in medium to darker skin.

Many people have both. Marks are different from scars: they are flat, while scars change the surface. If you have indented scars as well, see our acne scar treatment . The post-acne marks concern page explains the causes in detail.

Vbeam Perfecta for red marks

Vbeam Perfecta is a 595 nm pulsed dye laser whose light is absorbed by hemoglobin in blood vessels. It gently closes off the small vessels that keep a mark red, helping it fade faster than it would on its own. A cooling spray protects the skin surface during each pulse.

Vbeam can also calm redness around active breakouts. With lower settings there is usually only mild redness afterward; with stronger settings some purple bruising is possible for several days. The doctor discusses the balance between speed of results and visible downtime before treatment.

Pico laser for brown marks

Brown marks contain excess melanin. A picosecond laser such as our PicoK delivers ultra-short pulses that break pigment into tiny particles the body clears over time, with relatively little heat. Low-fluence toning passes are often used for scattered PIH, especially in skin prone to rebound pigmentation.

Topical treatments support laser work: ingredients such as azelaic acid, niacinamide or prescription brightening creams help slow new pigment production. Consistent sunscreen is essential, because UV exposure darkens and prolongs brown marks. Mixed red and brown marks can be treated in the same visit, with each laser applied where it is needed. Gentle settings are preferred over aggressive ones, because irritation can itself create new pigment.

Who is a good candidate?

Treatment suits anyone with lingering flat marks after acne, ideally once breakouts are mostly under control, since new pimples can create new marks. If acne is still active, the doctor may combine marks treatment with medical acne care.

Lasers are postponed over active infections or cold sores and may be adjusted during pregnancy. Recent tanning increases the risk of side effects, so avoid strong sun for a few weeks before treatment. People with darker skin can be treated, but settings are conservative to reduce the risk of new pigmentation. Results vary between individuals.

Downtime, sessions and travel

Most sessions take 15 to 30 minutes and allow you to return to sightseeing the same day. Expect mild redness for a few hours; after Vbeam, bruising is possible, so tell us if you have an important event or photos soon. You can generally fly the next day.

Red marks often improve noticeably after two to four Vbeam sessions spaced about four weeks apart. Brown marks may need several toning sessions plus home care. If you can visit only once, one session plus a clear home routine still helps. Request a consultation and we will suggest a plan around your schedule.

The Heal approach

We look at each mark's color before choosing a laser, so redness gets vascular treatment and pigment gets pigment treatment, rather than one device for everything.

Frequently asked

Post-Acne Marks Treatment: your questions answered

  • Will post-acne marks fade on their own?

Many do, but it can take months, and brown marks may persist longer in darker skin or with sun exposure. Laser treatment and good home care usually speed up fading.

  • Does Vbeam cause bruising on acne marks?

It can with higher settings, appearing as purple patches that fade over several days. Lower settings usually avoid bruising but may need more sessions. We discuss your priority first.

  • Can I treat acne marks and active acne at the same time?

Often yes. Vbeam can calm red active lesions while fading marks, and medical acne care prevents new ones. The doctor decides the order depending on how active your breakouts are.

  • What is the difference between acne marks and acne scars?

Marks are flat changes in color, red or brown. Scars change the skin surface, forming dips or raised areas. Marks usually respond to light-based treatment, while scars need resurfacing or collagen-building procedures.
